CREATIVE UPBRINGING
IN THE SERIES "WIR KINDER VOM BAHNHOF ZOO", PUBLISHED BY STERN IN 1978, HORST RIECK AND KAI HERRMANN DESCRIBE THE SITUATION OF DRUG-ADDICTED CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS EXEMPLIFIED BY CHRISTIANE FELSCHERINOW FROM GROPIUS-STADT IN THE DISTRICT OF NEUKÖLLN IN BERLIN. THE FILM WAS MADE BY ULRICH EDEL, HERMANN WEIGEL AND BERND EICHINGER AND WAS RELEASED IN 1981. THE BOOK WAS WRITTEN MORE THAN TEN YEARS AND THE FILM EXACTLY TEN YEARS BEFORE MY BIRTH, BUT THE FILM IS A CONSTANT COMPANION TO MY WORK. IT IS THE IMAGES IN THE FILM THAT ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT TO ME - THE STREETS OF GROPIUSSTADT, THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE AT ZOO STATION, THE COLORS, ALL SLIGHTLY FADED AND YET RADIANT.
IN ADDITION TO THE VISUAL WORLD OF THIS FILM, I DEVELOPED A GREAT INTEREST IN BRUTALIST BUILDINGS AND THE DESIGN TRADITION OF THE BAUHAUS. IN DEALING WITH THESE ARCHITECTURES AND OBJECTS, I AM INTERESTED IN TRANSLATING THEIR QUALITIES INTO GRAPHICS. BASED ON THIS, MY ARTISTIC DESIGN PRACTICE AIMS AT THE OSCILLATING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GRAPHICS, VIRTUAL SPACE AND OBJECT. FOR THIS, I USE THE INTERPLAY OF GRAPHIC LINES AND SHADINGS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECTS, THEIR MATERIALITY AND FORMAL LANGUAGE, AS WELL AS THE MEDIATION BETWEEN HEAVINESS AND LIGHTNESS.
Jonas Mannherz, born 1991, studied Visual Communication in Berlin and graduated with distinction. Jonas runs his own art direction studio, Büro Mannherz, and is a board member and creative director of Kunstverein Gastgarten e.V. Before setting up his own studio, Jonas worked for over 9 years in various agencies in Berlin and Hamburg. He has won a number of awards, including the New York Design Festival & London International Award for the brand development and design language of the NEXT Conference. Since 2021 he has been working mainly in the cultural sector, for example for the Kulturstiftung Schloss Agathenburg, the University of Hamburg and the University of Cologne.
